3 Ways to Find Balance as a Working Parent

You’re juggling work deadlines, laundry piles, school pick-ups, and a never-ending to-do list.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, there’s that quiet voice asking, “Am I doing enough for my child?”

Hi, I’m Alex Hurst, a child therapist at Power Within Child Therapists. If you’re a working parent feeling the constant pull between your job and your family, please know this: You are not alone.

Many parents carry a deep sense of guilt. You want to be present for everything, but the truth is, you can’t be everywhere all the time.

And that doesn’t make you a bad parent, it makes you human.

What your child needs most isn’t a perfect parent or endless hours of your time. What they need is you, fully present, even for a few consistent moments a day.

#1: Choose Quality Over Quantity

It’s not about how much time you have, it’s about how you show up in the time you do have.

A five-minute conversation after school. A quick cuddle before bedtime. A funny face across the dinner table.

These small moments of connection, when repeated with warmth and consistency, have lasting impact.

#2: Create Small, Meaningful Rituals

Kids thrive on predictability. Try building a few simple rituals into your routine, like:

  • A morning mantra or hug before school
  • A “high and low” sharing time at dinner
  • A five-minute game or story before bed
  • A weekly breakfast date, even if it’s just cereal in funny bowls

These rituals don’t have to be big or perfect. They just have to be yours. That’s what your child will remember.

#3: Don’t Forget About You

Balancing work and parenting starts with giving yourself permission to care for yourself.

Even caregivers need care and taking care of you is part of taking care of them. Even five minutes a day, breathing, journaling, stretching, or simply being still, can help you recharge and stay grounded.

Parenting while working is hard. The guilt is real. The exhaustion is real. But your love, your presence, and your efforts matter more than you know.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to create connection in the chaos, I’d be honored to support you. Schedule an appointment today at Power Within Child Counseling, and let’s help you and your child thrive, together.
