5 Ways to Implement Healthy Screen Time at Home

Managing screen time can feel overwhelming, especially when your child or teen is already navigating anxiety, depression, or significant life changes like divorce or loss. But then, technology is a part of our everyday lives, and it’s easy to let it take over.

However, establishing healthy boundaries around screen use can help promote better mental health, communication, and connection at home.

I’m Carly Schrimpl, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and owner of Power Within Child Therapists. In this article, I’ll share five practical strategies that can guide your family toward a balanced approach to screen time.

By doing this, you can foster a healthy relationship with technology that supports your child’s emotional well-being.

#1: Create a Consistent Schedule

Set clear times for screen use, whether it’s after homework or during designated hours in the evening.

When you establish routines, everyone in the household knows what to expect, which is especially reassuring for children who may be dealing with big emotions or major changes.

For instance, you might have a screen-free time between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm, where everyone engages in chores, play, or other after-school activities.

This helps provide structure and makes it easier to avoid the constant pull of screens.

#2: Model Balanced Screen Time Habits

If you want your child to adopt healthy screen habits, you must first model them. Children observe their parents closely, especially when it comes to tech use.

Limit your own screen time during family interactions. By showing your child that it’s possible to enjoy life without constantly being on a device, you set the tone for them to follow.

As a result, you create opportunities for engaging in tech-free activities together, like cooking, playing board games, or heading outside for a walk.

#3: Encourage Active, Not Passive, Screen Time

Not all screen time is equal. What type of content is your child consuming? Mindlessly scrolling through videos or watching endless streams of entertainment is not healthy for children.

Aim for interactive screen time instead. Encourage problem-solving apps, creative games, or video calls with loved ones. By doing this, you promote learning and connection.

You can set a timer to keep track of screen use or, even better, encourage your child to set one themselves. In doing so, they become more involved in managing their own screen time and understanding its impact on their health.

#4: Set Tech-Free Zones

It’s easy for screens to invade every part of the home. That’s why it’s important to designate tech-free zones. Consider setting specific areas, like the dinner table or bedrooms, where screens are not allowed. This also includes TV’s.

By doing this, you encourage more face-to-face interactions, which help nurture the emotional bonds within your family. These spaces promote healthy routines that don’t rely on the distraction of screens.

#5: Turn the Wifi Off at Night

Screens at night interfere with sleep. Turning off the WiFi at a certain time each night can be a game changer for everyone.

In some households, parents choose to cut off the internet after 7:30 pm, which prevents late-night browsing or using screens out of boredom or sleep struggles. This simple action helps everyone wind down without the temptation of screen use, allowing your family to focus on healthy sleep habits and relaxing activities before bed.

Implementing healthy screen time doesn’t have to be a battle. When you focus on consistency, connection, and open communication, you create a balanced relationship with technology that supports your child’s emotional well-being.

Remember that change takes time. By being patient and incorporating these steps into your routine, you’re setting up your child for success in managing their own screen time.
