Transitioning to Summer: How to Stay Connected, Reduce Stress, & Build a Great Routine

As we move into summer, many families feel excitement… but also, a lot of stress.
Without the structure of school, days can feel unpredictable, and that can be overwhelming, not just for kids, but for parents too.

Hi, I’m Carly Schrimpl, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and owner of Power Within Child Therapists.

Today, I want to share 4 tips to help your family transition into summer with more connection, less stress, and a stronger sense of routine, so that everyone can enjoy these next few months together.

Why Summer Can Be Stressful

Let’s start by acknowledging something really important: Summer break sounds relaxing, but for many families, the lack of structure creates anxiety.

  • Children often feel ungrounded without a daily schedule.
  • Parents may struggle to balance work, home, and constant ‘entertainment management’.
  • Transitions, even positive ones, can trigger big emotions, especially for children dealing with anxiety, ADHD, or recent life changes.

Recognizing that summer brings both joy and challenges allows us to be proactive, rather than reactive.

Here are some tips for a successful summer:

Tip 1: Focus on Connection First

The number one thing your child needs this summer? Connection.

  • Schedule one-on-one time: Even 10–15 minutes daily of focused attention makes a difference.
  • Validate feelings: Transitions are hard. Listen more than you fix.
  • Create small traditions: Weekly pizza nights, a Saturday morning walk, or an evening reading session builds memories and emotional safety.

When children feel emotionally connected, they’re more resilient and better able to handle changes.

Tip 2: Building Flexible Routines

Children thrive on predictability. Summer routines don’t have to be rigid. They just need to offer some anchors throughout the day.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Create a visual daily schedule (morning, midday, evening).
  • Include choice times: give kids some autonomy within the structure.
  • Set clear expectations around screen time, chores, and rest.

Routines aren’t about control. They’re about creating safety in an otherwise unpredictable world.

Tip 3: Reduce Stress for Everyone

Summer can be stressful and not every moment needs to be picture-perfect.

Ways to reduce stress:

  • Simplify your schedule: Say yes only to activities that fit your family’s needs.
  • Prioritize rest: For both you and your children. Boredom is okay. It’s where creativity lives.
  • Use mindfulness practices: Even simple breathing exercises or gratitude check-ins at dinner can help lower family stress levels.

Remember, a peaceful summer doesn’t mean a ‘perfect’ summer.

Tip 4: Redefine Success

Finally, I want to invite you to redefine what a successful summer looks like.

  • It’s not about doing more.
  • It’s about being present.
  • It’s about creating a few meaningful memories rather than trying to fill every moment.

At Power Within Child Therapists, we believe that when children feel safe, heard, and connected, they can truly feel enough — in every season.

Wishing you and your family a summer full of joy, connection, and growth!
